We here at OffsetCarbonFootprint.org are hosting five different tree-planting programs that plant trees though out the Northwest and Canada. All trees planted will sequester large amounts of carbon from the environment throughout their lives.

Trees love carbon because they need it for survival like humans need food. Trees survive and grow by producing energy via photosynthesis. During this process, trees absorb carbon dioxide and water and convert it into sugar and oxygen. The oxygen is released and the converted carbon remains in the tree. Some trees absorb more than others. Through our programs you can choose from these different species in different areas.

The Spirit Tree program plants trees on the First Nation lands in British Columbia. The people of the First Nations don't have the financial resources to plant trees themselves. Already 150,000 trees have been planted thanks to our successful pilot program. These trees will help return natural vegetation and animals to the area and sequester carbon at the same time. They will also help replace the forests devastated by the mountain pine beetle. These beetles have destroyed an area the size of England so far. The populations of these beetles have been increasing because winters are no longer cold enough to kill them off thanks to global warming.

Our Eco Tree program plants trees on lands in urban settings. We identify the areas that are empty of biodiversity and can be brought back into native forest cover. This helps sequesters carbon from the surrounding environment while creating a green space for the neighboring community to enjoy.

The Orca Rain Tree program plants native Giant Douglas Fir and Sitka Spruce Trees on Vancouver Island. The program was named after the orca whales that frequently swim by in the neighboring waters. There are at least 260 whales that make these waters their permanent home. Thanks to the rainy and cool climate on the island, the 2 tree species we have chosen to plant there grow extremely well. For every $2.00 you contribute one of these trees will be planted and each will absorb 2.5 tons of carbon through its lifetime.

Our Super Tree Program plants species of trees that are the most resistant to disease and pests. These trees, such as the Redwood, grow to huge proportions and can sequester up to 2.5 tons of carbon in its lifetime.

The Sponsor-A-Tree programs works a little differently than the others. A $25.00 contribution will plant 25 evergreen trees. These trees are placed in areas where the forest has been devastated by logging or disease. These trees grow naturally in the area and have a very high survival rate. These trees will be able to sequester 25 to 63 tons of carbon.
